Firm mattresses are just as popular as always but consider something of a medium to firm feel if you find that a really firm mattress feels to hard. A good quality medium to firm mattress such as a pocket sprung mattress will offer you excellent support without being hard. Foam and memory foam mattresses have become very polular in the UK over the last 7-10 years. A good quality foam mattress will support you very well indeed as it follows the contours of your body so you get excellent support without have to have a very firm mattress. Foam mattresses can be warmer to sleep on than a vented sprung mattress due to the fact that foam by its very nature tend to insulate heat around the body. Most people who find this uncomfortable benefit from using a quilt or duvet with a lower tog rating. Many people however find that after a few days they have adjusted to the different feel.
